About Us

Getting a good-paying job in your late teens and early twenties isn't easy. When you didn't finish high school and have no other training, it's almost impossible.

Birmingham YouthBuild, a program of Aletheia House, is giving Birmingham's low-income young adults, ages 18 to 24, a second chance. The program provides free GED classes, training in construction skills, and a chance to build housing for homeless families. Participants receive a stipend of $125 per week during the nine-month training period. Graduates receive national certification from the Home Builder's Institute of America and assistance in finding high-wage employment.

Our motto is "Building Youth, Strengthening Communities." Birmingham YouthBuild is more than a traditional job training program. The success of the young adults who complete the program will have a positive impact on their families and the communities in which they live, and will serve the entire region by providing area employers will the skilled workers they need to grow and prosper.

The program, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Labor, will provide training initially to 100 men and women, with a group of 50 beginning in May 2008 and a second group beginning in February 2009. Training sessions are held daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Transportation assistance is provided.

Construction contractors in the Birmingham area have responded enthusiastically to the program. "Finding motivated, skilled workers is one of our biggest challenges," observed Chris Kramer, a vice-president for Brasfield & Gorrie, one of Alabama's largest construction firms. "There are tremendous opportunities to make a good living in this field if you have the skills and are willing to work hard."

If you are an interested young adult, age 18 to 24, please contact us. Our next class begins in June 2010. We will begin recruiting in mid April. Applications are accepted daily. There is no expiration of any application submitted.

If you are a parent, teacher or adult mentor, please consider recommended a young adult for the program.
